Beaches
The surrounding area offers many wonderful beaches and secluded coves.
San José itself has four safe, sandy beaches. The main beach has lifeguards, sun beds and disabled access during the summer months.
Just around San José bay is a dirt track leading to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata. For several kilometres there are a dozen or so unspoilt, tranquil beaches. Wonderful for exploring on foot or by bike, there are also car parks at Genoveses and Monsul beaches (car access is restricted during July and August).
Los Genoveses is the first you reach; with a long fine sandy beach and shallow waters around the protected bay.
El Barronal is a lovely very quiet beach to visit outside the summer season and in summer time is renowned as a nudist beach.
Monsul is a beautiful beach with sand dunes to the left and an impressive rock splitting the beach in two.
Cala Higuera, on the other side of San José, is very sheltered and with its little stony cove it is excellent for snorkelling.
