Film Sets

The Almería area has been a popular destination for movie makers for over 60 years. Of particular note is the Desert of Tabernas which was the location for numerous movies, particularly the epic Spaghetti Westerns of the 1960’s. The Fist Full of Dollars trilogy was mainly filmed here and many of the sites can be visited.

Worthy of a visit are Oasys (formerly Mini-Hollywood), Fort Bravo and Western Leone all located near Tabernas and are located around restored film sets and now offer great themed days out. Oasys is the largest and you can wander around the film-set style village visiting the sheriff’s office, saloon with its can-can dancers, try on some of the costumes, visit the museum about the movies filmed locally and watch the gunfight staged each day. It also is has a large animal reservation with more than 150 species set in a stunning location. The restaurant offers a good buffet lunch and there is a swimming pool on site too.

For those interested in the Clint Eastwood movies a visit to the village of Los Albaricoques is a must, many of the scenes were filmed in this village notably the final gunfight in “For a Few Dollars More” and the local bar/restaurant the Alba has a display of memorabilia and offers good drinks, tapas and a Menú del Diá.

David Lean, when directing of the movie “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962), decided to use Genoveses Beach, just outside San José, as the backdrop for the attack on the train scene.

Monsul Beach was the setting for the Steven Spielberg film scene in which the father of Indiana Jones brought down a German place with his umbrella shooing away a flock of seagulls.
