If you enjoy golf, Almería is a wonderful place to visit. There are ten courses all within an hours’ drive of San José. The closest of which is Alboran at El Toyo located east of Almería.

A championship course built for the 2005 Mediterranean Games, located beside the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata and is easily reached in just 25 minutes. This links type course has wonderful views of the Mediterranean Sea to the south and the Sierra Alhamilla to the north. The course itself is well bunkered (66 No.) and makes good use of the natural elements in terms of lakes, streams and dry river beds so that every hole is different and challenging.

Located to the south of Almería at Vicar, near Roquetas del Mar this course is less than an hour away. Built in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains, this picturesque course offers wonderful views amidst palm and mimosa trees, agaves and many different species of birds.

Valle del Este (18 holes, par 71) 6300 yards www.valledeleste.es

Always maintained to the highest standard, the course has ample fairways, large receptive greens but some daunting carries on a few holes. The course can still represent an exacting challenge for even the low handicapper.

Desert Springs (18 holes, par 72) 6800 yards www.almanzora.com

Situated an hour north, in the Almanzora Valley near Vera, lies Desert Springs. The Indiana course is the first desert golf course in Europe and is built to the same standard as the famous desert courses in Arizona and California. The contrast between the well manicured greens and fairway and the arid, vividly coloured desert is stark. Each hole has its own unique features and all are interesting mixtures of springs, watercourses, dry river beds, rocks and cacti.
