Walking and Cycling
The area around San José is superb for walkers and cyclists alike. The Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata with its mountainous terrain, desert-like features and over 20 miles of unspoilt, quiet sandy beaches offers excellent walks and cycle paths with abundant flora and fauna. Local guidebooks and maps can be found in the tourist information centre in San José. Bicycles can be hired from Media Luna just off the main plaza.
Las Salinas de Cabo de Gata is the home of one of Spain’s most important wetland areas. The saltwater lagoon is often home to numerous pink flamingos and egrits, and the saltpans are the only ones still in operation in eastern Andalucía.
There are now several well marked specialist routes available for you to follow; Pirates, Flora and Fauna, Volcanoes, Cinematography etc. There is also a 4x4 trip which can be taken with a knowledgeable guide. Full details at the tourist information centre.
